Penn State Mont Alto Cheerleading Names November and December Cheerleaders of the Month

MONT ALTO, Pa. - The Penn State Mont Alto cheerleading squad is excited to announce its first two cheerleaders of the month for the 2019-20 season. The award is based on nominations from the team and is given to a cheerleader who stands out in her efforts for the month.

The November Cheerleader of the Month is Emani Gonzalez (Chelsea, Mass. / The White Mountain School), a freshman flyer. Gonzalez was nominated by her teammates for her positive attitude and work ethic, which has allowed her to pick up skills quickly.

"Emani has a dance and gymnastics background, but is new to cheerleading," said head coach Jennifer Deinlein. "She's fearless, though, and definitely coachable, which allows her to pick up new skills quickly. Her teammates really appreciate her positive outlook and dedication. It's a lot of adjustment but she's handling it beautifully."

The December Cheerleader of the Month is Sarah Mackey (Norfolk, Va./Granby High School), a freshman flyer and tumbler. Despite an injury suffered in late November, Mackey remained dedicated to the team and cheered every game while wearing a boot.

"When I asked for the December nominations, right away several people said Sarah," said Deinlein. "It's a testament to her dedication because she obviously wasn't at full strength this month and unable to perform the tumbling skills that the crowd has loved so far this season, but we all appreciate that she was still out there with as much spirit as ever. Some of the games got a little long but she stayed out there and kept cheering, even after I'd ask her if she needed a break."

Mackey is also a member of the women's soccer team and was named the PSUAC women's soccer Rookie of the Year at the end of the fall season.

The Penn State Mont Alto cheerleaders cheer for all home men's and women's basketball games. They'll return to action in mid-January at the start of the spring semester.
