Softball finishes runners-up in PSUAC tournament
PSUAC Softball Championship: Penn State Fayette 14, Penn State Mont Alto 8
DUBOIS, Pa.- Following a regular season finish of 12-2 and a #3 seed in the PSUAC tournament, Mont Alto softball found itself in a familiar situation on Sunday at Heindl Field. After dispatching Penn State Scranton on Friday afternoon 18-4 to advance to the double elimination portion, the squad fell to #7 seed Penn State Fayette 5-1.
On Saturday, Mont Alto won the rematch of the 2025 PSUAC Championship game by ousting Penn State DuBois by a final of 8-2 to move to Sunday's championship round where three teams remained. The first game on the slate was against #1 seed Penn State New Kensington. The Mont Alto offense came alive early with five runs in the top of the first inning. The big hits in the inning came on a 3 RBI home run from Hailey Spielman and a 2 RBI single from Aiyana Young.
After two innings, Mont Alto saw its lead shrink to just two runs at 5-3. Sarah Devilbiss added another home run on the weekend to make the score 7-3. Mont Alto scored two runs in the top of the fourth and were quickly met by New Kensington scoring three in the bottom half of the inning. Mont Alto added on key insurance runs in the fifth inning, with five runs capped off by a Spielman two run double.
Mont Alto added an insurance run in each of the last two innings and Kira Weikert capped off her complete game in the circle by striking out one and allowing five earned runs. For the second consecutive year, Mont Alto advanced to the PSUAC Championship contest, advancing to face off against #7 seed Fayette once again.
As in the game earlier in the weekend, Penn State Fayette's offense came alive with 18 hits in the championship round against Mont Alto as they finished runner-up in consecutive seasons with a 14-8 loss to Fayette. Mont Alto struck first in the contest on a RBI hit from Sarah Devilbiss. Taylor Doppelheuer capped off Penn State Fayette's response in the top of the second inning with a grand slam to center field.
Mont Alto quickly capitalized on some Fayette miscues in the bottom of the second inning to trim the deficit to 5-4. Fayette responded with two runs in the top of the third inning and Kylie Stevenson homered in the fourth to push Fayette ahead 8-4. Fayette added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to lead 13-6.
Down 14-6 late, Mont Alto mustered two more runs as Rachel Alleman plated Terri Williams on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Aiyana Young scored Lauren Allison on a fielder's choice.
