Softball loses opening round of USCAA SCWS 8-0 to Salem
USCAA Small College World Series: #5 Salem University 8, #4 Penn State Mont Alto 0 (F/5)
DUBOIS, Pa.- Penn State Mont Alto softball faced off against Salem University in the opening round of the USCAA SCWS on Monday at noon from Heindl Field in DuBois, Pa. Salem used a five run fourth inning followed by two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to blank Mont Alto by a final of 8-0 to move to Tuesday's winner's bracket semifinals. Mont Alto faces elimination in a game against Penn State Fayette on Tuesday at noon in a rematch of the PSUAC Championship.
Salem starting pitcher was able to keep Mont Alto off balance in the contest, only allowing two hits as she struck out five batters and earned the win. Mont Alto's Kira Weikert went 3.2 innings and gave up nine runs and six hits in her start.
Kylie Zinn grounded out to third, scoring Brooke Wise for the games first run in the top of the first inning. Gina Alvaro singled, Kendall Lemley and Jacobi Gledhill each doubled in the fourth inning to put Salem on top 6-0. Ali Shrieve added on insurance runs to force the mercy rule in the next half inning with her two RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.
Rachel Alleman and Sarah Devilbiss recorded Mont Alto's two hits on the afternoon.
