Women's basketball falls to Hazleton in quarterfinals 62-50
Women's Basketball- PSUAC Quarterfinals: Penn State Hazleton 62, Penn State Mont Alto 50
MONT ALTO, Pa.- Mont Alto women's basketball took on Penn State Hazleton Tuesday evening for the third meeting of the season in the conference quarterfinals matchup. Penn State Hazleton advances to the semfinals after knocking off second seed Mont Alto by a final of 62-50. Bry'Yasia Izzetta Monea Costen led the way for Hazleton with 16 points on 6 of 18 shooting. Topaz Williams-Fripp also scored 15 points on 6 of 18 shooting. Dariana Perez was the leading scorer for Mont Alto with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
With the score 6-5 Mont Alto in the early going, the home team went up six following a pair of free throws from Victoria Kalp and a three-pointer from Amelia Fouch. Perez would connect on a foul shot as Mont Alto led 13-7 after one quarter. Early in the second quarter, Mont Alto moved ahead 17-8 following a Shanez Morales layup. Mont Alto held a nine point advantage late into the second quarter until a pair of three were made by Hazleton, Mont Alto led 26-23 at the break.
Costen made a three with 4:56 left in the third to give Hazleton a 31-29 lead. Hazleton would quickly extend the advantage to six points following a Aliya Tikhtova layup as the visitors moved in front 39-33.
At the midway of the third quarter, Hazleton ballooned the lead to eleven with a 49-38 advantage. They would hold Mont Alto to just 2 of 9 shooting from the field (22.2%) in the third quarter and led 41-36 after three quarters of play. Lamarsha Wilson paved the way for the Hazleton offense in the fourth quarter with 8 points and Tikhtova had 6 in the final period. Hazleton would maintain their double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, besting Mont Alto by a final of 62-50.
Mont Alto will await their postseason chances during the USCAA Bid Show on Tuesday, February 24 at noon.
